If I wanted to buy a new outdrive, how would I do this? While looking I see outdrive for sale, but they never contain the transom assembly or the flywheel cover etc.

I have found new uppers, new lowers and transom assemblies sold separately, but what about the flywheel covers and y pipes?

It seems some one would have complete conversion kits

What exactly (engine, drive, transom assembly, year, model combination) are you trying to buy?

I have a 1979 5.7 mounted to a aq280 drive. I repowered 3 years ago and went with the older block motor so I could still use mechanical fuel pump, but went with Vortec heads. It only required a modified flywheel, but everything else is the same fit as the 1979. Boat is a 24ft Albemarle.

Was looking into the total price of possibly a ocean series VP or a Bravo 3. I would also look at used, but I only see the drive sections for sale when I find late model outdrives. I assume I would need to piece part the whole conversion whether I do it with new or used outdrive?

You will have to rebuild your transom to go for the old AQ drive to a newer VP or Mercruiser. There used to be an adapter/conversion transom casting, however it was about a grand

I assumed the economics would not be worth the effort. But I was curious about the lack of information on options to come up with a dollar amount. So if I purchased the adapter, I would then need to purchase the other items piece by piece?

Ayuh,.... That's the expensive way to do it,....

Buyin' a junk rotten busted crashed donor boat, with a runnin' driveline of yer choice is the cheaper way out, 'n ya get ALL the parts, 'n pieces,.....

Agreed Bondo, however the transom cutout for the current VP280 is just a hair smaller than the old OMC holes. So switching to anything except a VP AQ series DP290 will either require rebuilding the transom or the aformentioned no longer available adapter. If it was my boat, I would sell the 280 and find a DP290 or DPA

Ayuh,..... Understood,.... The adapters Are out there, though seem to bring 'bout a Grand,....

You can glass in the hole, 'n recut, I believe, cheaper,....

I mention the donor boat idea, as the cut-out pattern is there, as well as every piece needed for the entire driveline,.....

I can't Imagine the total tally of buyin' a complete driveline, by the piece,.....
Even used, ya spend to much, 'n find out all the things that oughta fit,... but don't,.....
