I posted a question about what prop size is right for my boat. Everyone is telling me to try one and check my w.o.t. acccording to the service manual. My boat doesn't have a tach and I don't want to put one one cause it's one less electrical connection i don't have to maintain and my boat is a slow fishing boat. How do people with tachs buy props. Do they guess which one they need, buy it, try it on the boat, find out it's above or below the recommended w.o.t. on the tach and then return it, buy another and repeat the process? I can only afford to get the right prop the first time cause if i use it my boat store won't take it back. When you buy a motor new doesn't it come with a prop already on it? There has got to be a way to get the correct prop without a tach and with out trying it first.

You can use a prop calculator such as the one on the Michigan Wheel website. This will get you close for your needs. The best thing to do is find a boat store or prop shop that will let you try out different props on your boat. Many manufacturers supply dealers and marinas with test props that are to be used on a loaner basis.

I have to add this... Your way of thinking is the misunderstanding we fight all the time...<br />Outboards over about 10-15HP do not come with props because each and every application is different, and there is no such thing as a prop for a "115 Johnson", or any other engine.<br />The tachometer is the most important gauge in the boat, and if you don't have one, you have no way of knowing how much work your engine is even doing, and if it's not propped for the top of the RPM range, the engine is lugging and likely will not last long. EVERYONE needs a tach, I don't care what size, kind, make boat it is.<br />"IF" you get the prop right on the first try, you'll be the first in history to do so...it just does not work that way.....

You can get a tinytach from tinytach dot com
Small, hand held digital tach.
Installs by wrapping a wire around the plug wire, and connecting one to ground.
Un-installs in 30 seconds.
