Any major work on your engine should not be attempted unless you have an engine specific service manual. I don't know of any on-line sources that would provide the detail you need. The process involves disconnecting the shift linkage, removing the bolts (including the one under the trim tab) and dropping the lower unit. The pump is at the top of the lower unit.

Evinrude Troubles topic.

You can buy a manual online from many places, MLA.

Don't work on an outboard without one.

Good luck. :)

I would STRONGLY suggest that you get the OMC factory service manual (mine has the black/gold cover) published by OMC/Bombardier. Any other aftermarket manual is a poor second choice. Your dealer can get one for you, usually about $30-$50.

One tip: if you remove the port-side mid case panel, it is much easier to do the shift linkage which is the hardest part of the whole job for me.

Nah Bollard, Long needlenose pliers, flashlight, grease to hold the lock washer onto the shiftrod connector bolt. It might be the type where you have to remove the keeper pin on the starboard side and push the shift linkage towards the port side.Hell, I don't know? :)
