I think you could get away with not unhooking the shift cable, but you will need to remove the drive from the boat. You won't have much play in the cable to get the drive away from the boat to separate the top gear case & if you damage the cable it's $600 plus to replace (if you can find it). I'd recommend undoing the shift cable.

Boy that was an informative response, the question was HOW to remove not IF.

You will need to locate the converter on the back of the engine. Pull everything off the front. One port side rear are 2 spring loaded arms. You take a small screwdriver and place it under the arms to hold them out. (they lock the cable out to maintain tension on it) Now pull the cover (big screws). Push the cable in as far as you can and install (should be attached by a wire) cotter pin from top of cable boss to hold outer cable housing in against the spring. Pull the plastic spacer out, pull the clips that hold the cable ends in the holes and carefully free the cable ends. Now push in, pull the pin and remove the cable. Take note of how it is in there, it is indexed and MUST go in correctly. When replacing DO NOT let the wires cross or rub on each other or you will have shift problems. Look in the Sticky section for the manual for your drive.

For stringer drive you can use the procedure here to remove the drive. Then split it at the exhause housing to get to the water pump housing. Removing the four bolts that hold the water pump housing on will be the hardest part. They are 5/8 bolts and they will be sealed on the threads as well as the head.

You should get a manual, but if you don't have one crowley's site has a few procedures like the one below that are straight out of the manual.

You could also do it witht the drive left on the boat. Take the four bolts holding the exhaust housing on at the top and the whol lower will drop down then rotate it out of the way set it on something all the while being careful not to strain your shift cable.

It's kinda hard working upside down, but it works.

In this post I put a few pictures.

Well...electric shift stringers were never designated 800 and also don't have shift cables.

Since it doesn't sound like you know what you have, I suggest posting a few pictures of your drive.
