how to check charging system

I have a 200 hp Johnson oceanrunner I beleive it is a 2000. I just installed two new batterys and attempted to hook up one of them backwards.I now need to check if i did any damage to the charging system.Is there some check that I can do with a volt meter the batteries read 12.8 volts without the engine running and 12.8 with the engine running.

Sounds like you may have smoked the rectifier.You can also check the rec. output at engine with the engine at idle and then increase rpms to around 2500 and see if voltage increases.Check for A/C voltage from the stator on the 2 yellow leads to rec.I believe it should read around 15-18.

you may have fried tha rectifier... its cheap enough though.... i did this same thing and fried my rectifier...... supposedly you should be able to run the motor at high idle and get more than 12.8

If your engine is a 2000 200 hp ,I believe the new units are around $200.
