Like the title says. And how do i know if they are bad?

I have a knock only at idle. Goes away when any throttle is applied, and nerver happens when i put it in gear, at any speed. 1982 Mercruiser 120, which has been totally rebuilt 3 years ago. I thought rod knock, but mechanic said its usually reverse of what im describing.... IE you hear a rod knock usually under load, or when feathering the throtle at 2500 - 3000 rpm. I have nothing in gear at 800 rpm.... or mid throttle....or WOT. Just at idle and OUT of gear. He said to check the exhaust flappers since he is on vacation (DONT worry i only emailed him, didnt call and bother him LOL)

Also, boat vibrates at idle and not in gear. Which is odd, but mechanic said its probably a motor mount. But i think something could be rattling at idle. So any direction for me? Especially with the flappers?

I would try to get a auto stethoscope and put it on the exhaust pipe, just below the rubber exhaust tube behind the riser. See if you can hear it there. Otherwise remove the rubber tube and have a look, the shutters should have a nice smooth rubber coating on them, if they are bare steel or blistered, should replace. Here is where they are: #7 http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...nbr=1057&bnbr=20&bdesc=EXHAUST+ELBOW+ASSEMBLY
