How to check temp sender at both ends?

1983 Invader 16' with 125A/270 Volvo penta. I've posted before about what I thought was overheating but checked with a thermometer and showed 180 degrees when running at idle. Temp gauge show 225 degrees at idle and while running. Is there any way I can check both the temp guage and the sending unit?

To check the guage, turn key on engine off. Unplug the temp sender wire, the guage should read cold, then ground it to a good ground source, the guage should peg to the hot side.
