Hello,
A friend gave me a stainless steel fuel tank that was not used for 3 years. Can you please tell a good way to clean it.
Thanks a lot.

Suggest you look at steam cleaning as a first resort. If possible try to ensure it is filled and emptied with fresh water after draining off all the fuel to an approved facility. It is not a good idea to immediately put a steam lance into a freshly drained or non gas free tank as there is a risk of static electric discharge causing ignition of gasses within the tank and that will ruin your day. Be careful.

If it's got the residue crud from fuel in it, the best way is to have it steam cleaned. If this is not an option, some fresh fuel with a carb/fuel injecter cleaner [like Gumout] with a lot of sloshing and soaking until you get it all out. You may have to repeat this several times. If the tank is free of this crud, soap and water with a thorough rinse will do the job. This has worked for me and hope it does the job for you.

Go to a hardware store and purchase a big bag of nuts and bolts (say about 3/8" or larger). Dump them into the tank and agitate the tank. They will act as an abrasive and are easy to retrieve (if any get stuck with a magnet). Some people suggest that you count what goes in and what comes out but I consider it a no-brainer....you will hear if any are left.

Use them with any cleaning solution that you decide on.

Bob
