How to determine what year engine I have

Guys can someone tell me how to determine what year power head I have. There is no numbers on it anywhere. The boat is a 1992 stratos. The engine is a closed deck block. What year did they start making that. Also is the closed deck better than open. I have 2 engines one of which I’m gonna rebuild. The 1990 Evinrude is a open deck block with everything stock the other is a Johnson closed deck that is 20 over & now will have to go to 30 over. Soon as fishing season is over I will starting the rebuild. What would be the best choice just looking for a good dependable motor to get from point A to B.
