I'm replacing the water pump for the first time since I bought it from the previous owner but having an issue to disconnect the shift link so I can slide out the lower unit. Maybe i'm not doing this right but I have attached a picture of the link. I unloosened the bolt from the link block and it feels like it can slide but a smaller pin on the same block connecting to the link seems stuck. I'm unable to see it on the other side as it's blocked.

The engine is 2001 Johnson 90 (J90VLSIG)

Any help is appreciated.

Remove the bolt completely and then the clamp will slide off. Looks the same as my 95-40hp. It is easier on mine if I remove the starter but not sure on yours. Best of luck. Rick.

No, you pull the hitch pin in the linkage on starboard side and push to the port side.

Agreed there is no need to take a bolt out.----Find the hitch pin.----After taking the pin out push that shaft to the port side.----A manual will SAVE you from making expensive mistakes.

Thanks all for the help. I pulled the pin and pushed the bolt to port side and that disconnected the link. Water pump was a simple install.
