how to disengage the out drive

i have a friend that has a 1985 Sunbird with a mercruiser io 4 cylinder 140hp i think. how do you disengage the out drive so you can just throttle the engine there is no button in the middle of the shifter. i can post pics if needed tomorrow and get the serial number

You should be able to pull the control toward the center of the boat then rev the engine. On mine I have to pull on the pivot point as to not put too much leverage on the whole control assembly.
