how to drain risers in closed system???

I have a 96 5.7 mercruiser and i know to drain the heat exchanger, and open the water intake line at the power steering cooler, but how do you get the water out of the risers? do you need to? there has to be alittle bit of water sitting down there on that gasket. i am just curious because i just had to redo the motor because that gasket failed last year and i dont want to miss another summer due to water in motor.

Most risers have a brass drain plug on each side

location of plugs, usually 1 on each side
