OK, I'm not sure if this post belongs in this forum but I don't know where else to turn. The weeds in my lawn have gotten out of control and Walmart has failed me for the last time. I've tried every concoction they offer only to have the weeds come back to life each and every time. The gloves are off. There has to be some chemical out there to do the job. PLEASE HELP!!!

Get a licensed lawn service to spray...they have the license to get the 'good' stuff (which will never be sold to the Walmart customers).

The right time is just before Spring...using a pre-emergent herbicide!

Or...you can do what my neighbor does. He 'parks' a car on cement blocks on his yard...waits a couple of months...moves it, and presto! No weeds!

The problem is not the weeds, it's that the lawn is not healthy. A healthy lawn will crowd out the weeds. You've already found out that chemicals don't really work to fix the problem and actually make it worse in the long run.
Here's some general things that work to have the best lawn in the neighborhood:
Aerate the soil with a core aerator. The soil is likely to be compacted and that prevents air and nutrients from getting to the grass roots.
Take samples and get the soil tested so you know what the deficiencies are.
Water in a thin layer of compost into the newly aerated lawn (no it doesn't smell)
Quit using the Wal-mart fertilizer and get some good organic stuff. Actually Scott's markets a line of organics now. The results of the soil test will guide you on what you need. A high nitrogen fertilizer is like crack for the grass; it goes like crazy for a while then collapses. You want to build a good, deep root structure that will support a dense lawn that keeps the weeds from growing. Deep roots also require less watering.
It took me two seasons to get my lawn's issues mostly corrected from the previous owner's misdeeds. For the past 10, I've to do nothing but fertilize it in the spring and fall and it looks great. I mow it on the high side, leave the clippings there, and water when it needs it. That's all.

Find a local lawn and garden shop. They are most familiar with the conditions and can guide you in the right direction. Most will test you soil as well and tell you what you need.

Walmart sells the same chemicals everybody else uses, it's just that most of it comes in weaker concentrations. These concentrations should be enough to to the job.

What are you using that does not work and are you following the application rates and isntructions?

Also, there is nearly no such thing as eliminating weeds. They will always come back. Proper care, by creating good grass will help greatly in keeping weeds down, as other posters have stated.

I have never read an obituary that said "he had a beautiful lawn."

I would sooner mine read "he spent all his free time on the water and also caught the state record largemouth bass"

A weed is a plant that is not growing in exactly the place you wanted it to. The four acres of my property I mow has a nice mostly green cover and looks good from a distance. Almost golf couse like in aerial photos :)

Find a Lesco of John Deere Landscapes store in your area. Take them a soil sample and let them test it. Then they can recommend the mix or fertilizer to use. And they can sell that same fert mix with Atrazene in it which is a weed killer. This will feed your lawn and keill the weeds at the same time. I do Lawn Maint and Landscaping and I use these products all of the time. The atrazene mix works very well on the Centipede and St. Augustine lawns in our area.

For my Bermuda grass, I apply 18-2-3 mix fertilizer without atrazene and the weeds are gone in about 2 weeks.

Lesco and John Deere Landscapes are the same (JD bought out Lesco but still sell fertilizer under the Lesco brand) and they can recommend the proper fertilizer mix for your grass....

+1 on using LESCO!

Most of the greenskeepers around here swear by LESCO...there must be a reason!

My motto on lawn maintenance.
If it's green.............mow it.

If it's not green........ mow it.
Cement is a good weed killer. Liberally pour cement over the weed infested area and you will have a lot more parking spaces for your boats and your lawn issues will be permanently solved.

Re: How to eliminate lawn weeds!

Thanks for all the helpful advice! 4 years ago, I had the best lawn in the neighborhood. Then, my son was born. My daughter was born 2 years after that. Earlier this year, we bought the boat. It all comes down to free time and something had to give so I have neglected my lawn. It's probably very unhealthly so maybe I'll just bite the bullet in the spring and have ChemLawn do their magic and take it up the #@# with another monthly payment

If I catch the world record bass next summer, I should have enough money to completely pave my entire yard!!!

Re: How to eliminate lawn weeds!

Using a Pro lawn service is great if you don't have the time. No real "man" wants to admit defeat by having someone come out and do the work for them. It's kinda like having a plumber come out, therefore admitting that the problem is out of your league. Joking aside.

I am one of those so called "men" who will not admit defeat so I still walk behind the broadcast spreader cursing myself everytime. I once had dandelions out the whazoo. I found a Scott's product in granular form. When the lawn was moist I spread it out. I did not water the lawn and scheduled around the rain so that the grains had good contact with the weeds for 24 hours. I do this twice a season and have a relatively weed free lawn.

Like stated before, a healthy, tight grass is the best way to choke out weeds.

Eh, I've never worried about weeds too much. When I mow my lawn it looks nice, green, healthy & evenly trimmed from the road. As long as the weeds are the same color as the grass I don't sweat it too much.

frequent mowing is also important. grass will survive and thrive while weeds won't have enough time between mowings to get re-established before the next cutting. the grass will crowd out the weeds.

Re: How to eliminate lawn weeds!

I think atrazine is a restricted use pesticide, due to ground water concerns. I would stick with a yellow (pendimethalin or trifluralin) herbicide in the spring before any weeds have emerged. Your weed pressure and weeds present will determine if you want pendimethalin or trifluralin. Pendimethalin is a little better on grass species. but both are pretty decent on broadleaf weeds.
