There's about an acre of overgrown and abandoned property behind my house that I'd really like to buy. I remember several years ago using some software or a website that showed a map of the area, with property boundries, values, and owners address.

Anyone know where I can find such a thing today? Some real estate website?

I don't know about a web site but if you go to your county court house tax dept. They have tax maps you can look at.

tax records at your county seat.

Or you could occupy it in some fashion and claim squatters rights to ownership. ;)

Call your County's tax assessor's office for this information. You can also ask any title company and they will provide you with title and plat map information (usually for free if you promise to use them at the time of purchase).

Here in OKlahoma you can go to the county website and put in the address and see the owner and its value.

Something is only worth what someone wants to pay for it, assuming it's for sale. That said, property values on the west coast are highly inflated.

That is just the fair market price listed.Or for tax purpose. You need to find out if is For Sale..
Now here's one.. If you can't find the owner, he maybe in a rest home.. You can track him/her down by snooping through county court records. If the owner is there and property isn't on lien, you maybe able to get it, by being nice..
I am sure there are realators just waiting to jump on this piece of property.

ZMOZ,
just check with the registry of deeds or the tax assesor and get the name and address of the owner and call them personally.I buy land in northern newyork in aresa around my hometown. Its mostly by word of mouth but every 2 years they auction off property for back taxes and there are some very good deals.

Re: How to find real estate owner/value?

A while ago some of the neighbors were talking about buying it. I heard something about the owner being dead and his son was saving it to build a house some day, and didn't want to sell. That was when it was worth around $50k. He might be a little more interested in fair market value now. Everything is for sale for the right price. ;)

I'm thinking about buying it and building a house there (with my own 2 hands) to rent out. The way things are going around here it will be worth $500k in 10 years. The .16 acres my house is on is already worth $121k.

As if I don't have enough projects that aren't finished already...

Re: How to find real estate owner/value?

the tax assessment is not equal to market value, although it varies greatly from state to state. in my part of maryland, the tax assessment is usually about 50% of what the property is going for on the market. of course, the assessment doesn't mean much, unless you know what they are taxing per dollar of value. my parents 3000 sq ft home on 7 acres in jersey is assessed for about half of what my 1300 sq ft townhome in maryland is. but they pay 3 times more in property taxes.
