How to fix skeg damage on 1981 Johnson 9.9 hp

Good day y'awl, Hit bottom and rocks and did damage to the skeg on my outboard motor. About one inch missing from the bottom and a some metal missing closer to the prop. I suppose I could leave it that way but this OB is low hours, bought new, and I just love it so I want to have it fixed. Been quoted for repair that includes welding a new skeg. On the other hand would there be a stainless skeg protector that would be made to fit on this OB ? Is it easy to install like doint it myself ? Would it affect performance ? How much would I expect to pay for that part ? Where could I buy that ? Now that was a big mouthfull of questions ... LOL Thank you.

I was at a boat shop in B.C. last week. Went to look at his bone yard and could not believe how many 9.9 carcases where in his pile. Had it not been raining so hard..... anyway, I'm just thinking it might be cheaper to get a new gear case c/w a good skeg. Best of luck. Rick.

Don't try to replace the skeg only, as the skeg and the upper hsg are a matched set. You may want to google skeg guard and see what you find.

boobie...single housing gearcase...seems like google might be the best place to search...I know I've seen them in the bass pro catalog
