Hello everyone in this forum. I find great what is going on here!!!
Although I was searching for a while I could not find anything about this so far (probably a typical newbie question):

I own a 1981 Mariner 20HP and want to charge a small 12V battery. Is there any way to do this? Is it maybe possible to install an alternator or so?
(Mariner 20, Serial# 6A9-S-02260. built 1981)

Thank you.
Regards
Ghaffy from Vienna, Austria (Europe)

They do make a Electric Start kit that sells for $342.00, but that may be more that you want to put out. 1 50-97693M ELECTRIC MOTOR $341.62 from here.

web page

Look under ELECTRIC START MOTOR

thank you, Rick, for this quick reply. Infact the electric start kit seems to be nice, yet too expensive for me, and I actually need the power supply only, and not so much an electric starter.

regards
Ghaffy

Usually "charging systems" are associated with electric starting.

I looked at those parts listings and what jumps out at me is that thy use a different magneto assembly and flywheel for the electric start models than they do for the manual start ones.

Looking at those prices and NLA staus of some parts, the best way to get a charging system on that motor would be to steal the flywheel and magneto stuff from a dead electric start model - then add the rectifier mounting plate and rectifier.

-W

Excellent idea as usual, Clams. That would do it on the cheap. Check E-Bay for dead motors that may have thrown a piston or lower unit...

Thank you, Clams & Rick, for these ideas. I have now already contacted Marinerparts for what would be so to say the minimum package (maybe starter kit without start motor or so), and I am going through the ebay listings more or less world wide to find a dead Mariner or Mercury that could fit. If I read my parts & sevice manuals correctly, the 20/25/30 HP versions are pretty much the same in terms of the electrical system.

regards
Ghaffy
