1985 Johnson 150hp, 17 ft Charger boat. Is there a way to get more travel from the trim unit while running WOT. The gage shows full trim but the boat could actually run with another 10 degrees or so. My friends Merc 175 will trimm much further before going into the tilt stage. Thanks, Bob

Yes there is but what you need is a prop with more lift. Let us know what you have for a set up and we can go from there.

Good luck!

bmurray,
Just because, the gauge says, it's at full trim, that doesn't mean, it's right. The sender might not be properly adjusted. Try trimming out more, until the prop, starts to loose it's bite, or your RPM goes up, without any increase in speed, or the boat even hints at getting squirrely. ;)
I don't even have a trim gauge on my boat. I just go by the tach, and feel technique. :D

Re: How to get more trim from my motor

the engine will trim to the limit that it switches to tilt and stops. The set up is a 17 ft Charger with a Johnson 150 hp and a 21 pitch prop. Looks like a factory aluminum with a slight cupping (only on 2 blades, 1 is damaged). Turning 5500-5600 when fully loaded with fuel, wife and two young kids. It looks as though the trim rods just don't have the stoke. It will no go into tilt while running across the lake. I'm comparing the angle of trim to a Mercury on my friends boat. It has more trim before going into a tilt, seems to have longer stroke.

local dealer suggested extending the stops that the trim rods contact or getting a tapered wedge on the transom. I could easily fabricate some longer stops, they just have a nut holding them in. What do you think? Thanks

Tapered motor mounting shims are available to set up motors on angled transoms.

bmurray,

The wedges would be the cheapest way to go and a lot simpler than diving into the trim rams.

Be aware that you will lose some ability to "tuck in" for a strong hole shot.

Get that prop fixed, you're not doing yourself any favors by running around on a damaged prop.

Thanks all for the input. I will get the prop fixed or get a new one. The trim extenders at Bass Pro is what I'm going to try. I will make them instead of buying them. My hole shot seems to be better if trim up just a bit anyway. I will let everyone know how it comes out. :)
