I am changing the water pump on my 1976 Johnson 85 horse, and there is a rod that is stopping me from getting my lower assembly off, can anyone tell me how to get this off??

Get a book for starters best $25 I ever spent. Then take the screw out under the carbs where the shifter rod connects to the powerhead. Follow the linkage from your shifter cable in under the carbs and there is a painful to get back in screw under there that has to come out...good luck
