I have two seals that need to be removed since I am replacing all of the lower unit seals of my 72 Johnson 6 HP (in the middle of a rebuild of the entire motor). These 2 seals are located at the prop head bearing and the impeller housing retainer (pictured).

What is the best way to get these seals out, without destroying or damaging the parts? That impeller housing retainer is a very hard to find part.

Should I use a Dremel and cut them out and clean the bores or is there a better way?

Thanks

the center silver one, filp it over and drive it out with a punch or screwdriver. I don't know what other seal you are talking about. how about editing you picture?

I like to use a slide hammer with a screw on the end. Just drill a small hole in the seal and thread the slide hammer into an POP...

If you don't have a slide hammer, auto parts stores have tool loaner programs.

I had the local dealer install the gear selector seal <O ring> as they had the tool to do it properly w/o damaging the bushing..labor was $10...this was taking only the housing to them..the d/s seal in the plate I drove out from behind...the seal in the gear head housing...left well enough alone, but the slide hammer with the screw head looked to be the best alternative..that seal housing looked to me to be almost pinched in at the rear

Be careful, that seal housing plate below the water pump is thin and very easy to break. And $$$$$ if you do break it. I put it in my lathe and cut it out. Easy for me to say because I have a lathe. Your suggestion of a Dremel is the next best solution. Cut it down till paper thin on one side and pop it out.

I second the dremel if you have one. Also, cut out a recess in a piece of wood a bit larger than the diameter of the seal and try to drive it down from above by catching a lip. I also try to slightly heat the aluminum too.

Agree on the seal puller but be careful.

I do have access to a lathe so I might try that too. I think I got lucky with this housing retainer in the picture, I bought it off of ebay for about $20. I know it's no longer available from Evinrude, so I want to be very careful with it. Thank you for your advice F_R

Thank all of you who posted too. I'll have to go buy one of those seal pullers.
