How to hook up tach on Ocean Pro 175

I have a 1998 ocean pro 175. I got the boat and there is no tach on it. I know this motor has system check on it but all the plugs have been cut off of the wiring harness. What I'm wanting to do for now is hardwire a tack in so at least I can get my rpm's to get the proper prop on it. I am planning on replacing wiring harness and getting all of that straightened out at a later date. Anyone know what I need to do. I know one wire goes to the ignition but I have no idea which post to hook it to and what would be the sending wire color. is there a ground on the ignition or does it need to run to fuse block. And last what setting does the tack need to be on I see several on the back. the tack I have the needle is not sitting on 0 its at about 4 can that be fixed with the calibration setting,

The OEM Harness would have had an 8 pin connector for the System Check Tachometer, plus 3 ring terminals for using a conventional tachometer. If they are still available you may use them. If not, you will need to find three wires to power the tach: purple for +12VDC, Black for ground and grey for Tach signal.

Purple would originate at the ign switch "I" post. Black would originate at the battery negative terminal. Grey would originate at the voltage regulator, behind the flywheel cover. I forget the setting, but it should be avail online at the tach manufacturer's site. The tach would normally zero when the engine is off and +12VDC and ground are applied.

Ok so I had some down time and wanted to hook my tach up just to see if it was working. I can see that power is getting to it because the needle will move a little when I apply power. I hooked the gray wire up and nothing happens. I thought it might be my tach so I tried a friends to see if that did anything and I got the same results. I made sure it was on 6 and that it was connected properly but still no results. Could there be something wrong somewhere on the motor?

Sure, The voltage regulator could be faulty, or the wiring from the VR to the tachometer could be shorted to ground or open. Can you take a continuity test from the grey wire at the tach to the grey wire at the VR?

Does the motor charge the battery when it is running?

Put a volt meter across the battery and rev the motor up to 2000 rpm. You should see about 14.2-14.7 volts if it's charging.

What do i set the meter on.? Like i said not to swift on electrical

Ok did continuity test we are good on that part but no change in battery volts with motor running. So i guess that means bad regulator (that is same thing as rectifier isn't it? ) now the only thing i have hooked up on the motor is Ign and the leads to battery there is not another cable that goes to battery it's there for charging. 2nd question i have a 1993 175 that i got four a parts motor the only thing i see different on the rectifier is that the 93 has butt connections where my 98 had a plug how would i find out if i can use and just put the plug end on the older one versus having to by a new one

Your motor should have a water cooled voltage regulator (35 A charging capacity) located in the top of the block, right behind the flywheel. It had four bolts holding in to the block, and it is under a plastic cover with 4 stainless screws. The voltage regulator should have a round plug, a couple of bullet connectors and a red charging wire. The parts diagram of the '93 motor shows it has the same voltage regulator. Try and swap them, and see if tach works better.

Unless of course you have some sort of cross-flow motor, or the year is older.

Yeah the older motor had bullet connectors where as my 98 has a different stake plug that i can put where bullet connectors. I just wanted to make sure they were compatible

If the connectors on the voltage regulator are different, I do not know if they are compatible. The 60* V6 motors of 1998 and 1993, should share a voltage regulator. If the connectors are different, something is wrong.

The only thing that looks different is the connectors. I know they changed the wiring after 93 some time because the 93 has the red plug wiring harness where the 98 had a different style. My local evinrude shop had told me that. So i don't know if that is the only difference. The coils , power pack and just about every other party is interchangeable and has same part number.

Scratch that will bee buying a new one that one looks horrible don't want it in my motor looks a little different anyway thanks for the input
