I have a manual for my 40 hp Mercury, but it shows 3 possible stators for it. I am sure it is not the red stator, but a black stator. There are two black stators listed in manual, 9 amp and 16 amp. The resistance in ohms are different in the stator test for the two. How can I find out which one I have? the s/n on motor is OC168090. The switchbox has part number 332-5772A1
Thanks, Foz

Re: How to identify stator 1989 40 hp

ricksrster, I went to the link you posted and got this message "Information for this serial number is not available on our web site. Please contact the dealer 0 concerning serial number" I have an electric start 40 hp if this will help identify my stator.
Thanks Foz

I went to link as described, but it did not help identify stator, it only showed part numbers?

go to www.mercurypartsexpress.com. click on parts. enter your serial number. enter zip code. click nearest dealer. This will get you to a menu for parts.

Re: How to identify stator 1989 40 hp

According to serial number you listed the stator you need is a 398-832075A20 and lists for $325.00 and I'm sure is one of Merc's stator kits. I don't recommend going that route personally. I would recommend using the CDI replacement. It's cheaper and much easier to install and carries a 2 year warranty. I won't go into the details why I recommend this path now, but I've been a Merc tech for over 30 years and believe me it's the best way and it'll cost about half of what Merc's replacement cost which should be about $190.00 and the part number is 174-5454K1.

Hope this helps.

Happy boating.
