How to increase hp on '89 30 hp Evinrude???

Hey guys,<br /><br />I got an 1989 Evinrude outboard engine with 30 hp. <br />How can I increase the performance from 30 to 'bout 35 hp easily? Do I have to change the carburetor? Do I need another needle for the carburetor?<br />Thx in advance!!!

I don't believe there is an easy way to increase hp other than buying a bigger motor.

There may be more differences than just the carb. It's not so much a matter of jetting as the throat size of the carb. The higher horsepower will typically have a larger throat and/or less restrictive venturi. But even if you maxed-out the horsepower, you wouldn't notice much difference. 2 or 3mph would be about all.

LD, are you after strictly an increase in horsepower or an increase in performance?<br /><br />In 88 there wasnt a whole lot of difference between the 30 and 35. That had a lot to do with why they only had one in 89. The carbs, intake and tuner were the same. Even some 30 and 35 blocks were the same.

So, we are looking for an increase in performance (speed) not necessairly strictly an increase in hp.<br /><br />OK. Tell us more about your set up. What prop are you running? What's the top rpm with the exact load youll have when looking for more speed? Where is the AV (commonly called the cavatation) plate in relation to the keel?

At the moment I don't know the rpm with load exactly. I ain't got a revolution counter for the engine. I was just thinkin' 'bout installing a carb. from a 40 hp outboard at my 30 hp. Will it work?

A 40 hp carb will bolt on. Will it help? I doubt it.<br /><br />Getting better performance is like going on a trip. To choose a route to get where youre going, you have to know where you are now.

You have to realize that the 40Hp class is an entirely different motor. Jetting is going to be hit or miss and you might trash a piston in the attempt. You might say it's like putting a bigblock carb on a smallblock motor. It ain't just going to bolt-up that easy.
