how to install a new rpm gage

i have a 1975 boat with a 1976 evinrude 75 hp on it. when i bought it the wires to everything was a mess, so i re-did it all. everything is good now except my tack-rpm gage. could someone please tell me how to install a new one.

Purple wire from control box to ignition(I) terminal on gauge. Black to Ground(G) on gauge. Jump into another gauge hot wire for the backlight.

thanks for help. also will a tack for a car work or does it have to be made for a boat
