I need help installing fishing rod holders on my boat. I plan on trying my hand at trolling with dipsy divers or just flat line troling. I purchased two rod holders from Cabela's. These are the kind that can swivel in any direction. The mounting base has four holes in it for the screws. If I mount it to the boat, i am afraid that the fiberglass will break. Should I use a self tapping screw? Should I use a nut and a bolt? I will be fishing for walleye and steelhead on Lake Erie. Please help.

Welcome to iboats.

Nut, bolt and a wide backing plate. You want to spread the load out to prevent fiberglass damage.

Bob

yes, welcome steelhead79

I second Bob's post .. a couple scraps of plywood or aluminum sheet cut-offs for backing work great.

I'll add fender washers, nylon lock nuts and a shot of silcone sealant to aid in keeping water from sneaking through the holes too .. don't need much of it.

good luck

Is the base recessed in the the fiberglass or set on it? Mine from the factory and the additional ones I added set down thru the fiberglass and I just use ss self tapping. If the holder sits on top then I would bolt with backing.
