Re: How To Log Your GPS "Mark" Data
When I set a new waypoint I let the unit assign a number. I carry a little note book or a digital voice recorder. Usually the crew handels the notebook and I use a voice recorder. I record the number given, what it is, how deep the water is. Then after fishing the spot a note on how we did.
Example Waypoint 487, Depth 187 feet, Larger Rockfish Spot , caught 7 nice rock fish and 20 lb ling, Very rocky.
Then back at camp or when I get home on a one day trip. Next I go in and edit the information.
Example this new waypoint is in a area where I have several other waypoints set but they are form 225 to 237. So I will edit the 487 waypoint name to "238 Larger Rock fish" and then change the symbol to a fish symbol.
If I only have one or two to do then I will edit it on the unit.
If I have a lot to do like after spending a week at the ocean then I will upload the waypoing to my computer and change them then down load back to the unit.
I also keep a record of the waypoint on my computer and Print it out into a Large log book and list even more information. I always list latitude and longitude, depth and larger rock fish Spot.
I my case where I have a Loran C and 2 GPS units I also enter the same data into the other units.
Not everyone does this but for me it worth it. One can very easy when out on the water go to delete a waypoint and end up deleting all. Then you have to find spots with no aid.
One more thing I do. If the waypoint is a Navigation waypoint or part of a route then I will also note the compass heading and distance from the waypoint before it to it and then the compass head and distance to the next waypoint after it.
This does not have to be done on the water. It can be done after you get home with the unit.
I do this just incase I have a total electronics failure out in the fog and need to find my way back in. So far I have never needed it But just in case.
