How to manually pull start my motor ?

(1985 or '87 Johnson Evinrude 30hp )

Thought it might be a good idea to ask ... my electric starter is on the fritz and thought I should equip myself with some rope ... just in case.

How long of a rope ? What type ? and procedures please ?
