I was able to resolve this one with a simple solution.

I took a 6 ft 2x6 and lashed one end to the engine near the propeller so that the the board ran up the length of the motor. That left about 3 ft sticking above the engine cover. I then tied a rope to the top of the board and started to pull. The leverage provided by the board made tilting the engine quite easy.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Hi all,

I have a 1999 Evinrude "90 Ficht with a dead trim motor. I haven't been able to figure out how to manually tilt the engine so that I can pull the boat out on a trailer for repair.

I tried opening the release valve on the side of the engine and that allowed the engine to drop to its lowest trim level but I have not been able to get it to budge when I try to manually raise it. I even tried putting the engine in reverse to see if it would move, but no luck.

Is there a trick to this that I am missing?

Thanks for any help.

Paul, If that motor is anything like my '98 Johnny 150HP, you might be able to remove the lower pin that holds the PTT unit to the transom bracket. You can then tilt the motor up by hand and remove the top pin.

Watch out for the wires. I had to remove the PTT wiring harness connector pins from the connector body, in order for the wires to pass thru the hole in the transom bracket. There should be an after market PTT motor available. You can try Arco. it could save you $200

Thanks all,

I went down to the marina tonight to take another crack at it. I was able to get the engine to lift about 3 inches by giving the throttle a good shot with the boat tied at the dock.

With some help from a friend I should be able to get a 2x4 under there which will give me enough lift to pull it out. (I hope!)
