how to measure lower unit back lash

I've got a '65 Merc 900 that I am replacing the bearings and seals in the lower unit. I've got a great older Seloc manual that gives me the backlash specs, but doesn't tell me how to measure it.

Is it measured from the prop or driveshaft, and how far from the center of the shaft?
