Ok well I found out where the needle bearings were from. the drive shaft bearing in the upper part of the lower unit...:D

it's on a 1973 18hp evinrude model 18304A

But there is a brass seal and a rubber bushing on top of that bearing. In my manual it says i need a bearing puller special tool #380655
and a bushing remover tool. #304514

How do i pull this seal without a puller? I have tried prying it up with a screwdriver but the soft brass is bending.

any ideas?

link to diagram its part number# 39 & 50 i'm talking about.

If you can replace the seal, id just get in there with long nose pliers and some penetrating oil.
Thats without seeing the illustrations though as they didnt load for me

the brass is the housing for the seal..all one piece...however you can rangle it outta there w/o chipping or gouging the aluminum housing it's sitting in...a seal puller can be had for 10 bux or so..you may have to tear as much of the rubber out as possible then try to pull the brass part inward to collapse in on itself and take it out a chunk at a time

Buy or borrow a seal puller. Pry up gently at several points around the perimeter of the seal, being careful not to nick the housing. The old seal WILL be destroyed.

I have the exact same engine as you do and likewise I was a tad confused on how to replace those seals. Part #39 can be removed by using a flathead screwdriver to pry up the seal out of the hole. Be extremely careful as to not damage the aluminum housing when you are prying. You will destroy that seal. That is just how it is designed. Once the seal is out you should have easy access to your bearing. If it gives you any problems, you can spray PB Blaster (a penetrating oil that is absolutely amazing) onto the surfaces and let it sit for a couple of hours and try again. The bearing should be able to be knocked out from the bottom side using a metal rod slightly larger diameter than the driveshaft. To do this, take your lower unit with the skeg and all the gears removed, flip it upside down, insert the metal rod into the driveshaft hole, and tap out the old bearing. Again let me emphasize do not damage the aluminum housing. With the old bearing out, you can put your new one in and tap it in from the top side of the lower unit. If you have ordered the sierra reseal kit, you will have two driveshaft seals. Use both of them. Face one of them rubber side down and the other rubber side up. This will effectively seal the oil inside the lower unit and water out. The original one seal design sealed the oil in but let water in through the top.

Also like capn chaos suggested in your other thread, pack the bearing with grease to keep the needle bearings in place while re installing. It would not be a fun task to be almost there and have the needles fall out.
