well, the sparkle on your sled is sprayed on with the gel coat. if its got the big sparkles, I dont think you can get that big of flakes in paint, even trying to spry gelcoat with the big flakes is tricky..

You can try to spray clear gel coat over the areas that are down to the flake, it may or may not match the surrounding area well, but if it does it an easy fix. If you sand into the flake, or if it is worn away, it will look different and there's not much you can do. Redoing the entire deck, or spot repairs are difficult to do with flake.

I'd clear coat the entire metalflake area to get an even shine. The thin spots (if too thin) may look a little different but still should be much improved. Shouldn't be too costly to try either, since you can do it yourself.

2 part PUs bond and hold up well, but they go on thin, so if the surface is rough and needs some filling it may not work as well. Gel coat will fill rough areas and needs to be sanded and pollished, it also needs more aggressive (coarser sandpaper) surface prep for it to bond well. Remeber you don't want to sand into the flake with either method. Check your local automotive paint store and get the best stuff they carry, it doesn't take much PU to cover the deck of a small boat so go for the good stuff.

Re: how to refinish/flake

From limited experience I've found that if you sand the flake and use clearcoat. It will be shiney, but, it will turn any color "flakes" to a silver looking color. (sanding gold flakes turns them into a grayish silver color). This has a tendency to make the finish have a CLOUDY appearance also. (even though it is shiney).
You can purchase the BIG glitters from many boat manufacturers. I called Ranger and they sent me the right glitter for a 72 once. Had to buy a new nozzle and keep the pot shook up constantly. I sanded the boat enough to scuff up the surface with the idea of mixing the glitter with clearcoat and spraying that for my base coat.
The base was still glittery, so, all I wanted to do was ENHANCE the appearance back to original which was easier than "changing" a color completely.
The big problem was the large glitters wanted to stand on edge. They would not lay down.
Once the boat was glittery again, I sprayed clearcoat only over it. TOOK LOTS of coats to build it up enough to cover the glitters standing on edge.
Finished product looks like it did when it was new, if not better.
Lesson learned: I WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN! Had it been something other than just a top cap, this boat would be in the dumpster now.
I stronly advise to just find a highly metalic looking auto paint that you like and just repaint it.

Can automotive urathane type paint be used to repaint fiberglass? I'm not impressed with the color selection in marine paint.

Yes, use a good 2 part system and you should have no problems.

Re: how to refinish/flake

You can get some REALLY tough clearcoat from PPG. It's expensive and if you plan on wet sanding it and buffing it to remove any orangepeel, dust, bugs, trash...you'de better do it within 48hrs or it will be cured to hard to sand.
It can be done later, but, you'de wish you had done it sooner.
Also single stage Imron works well. Same thing on the color sanding/buffing.

Brownie is right about what sanded and buffed metalflake will look like. If you want to refinish the gelcoat flake you can buy bags of the colored flake. There was a seller on ebay selling bags of flake in several colors.
