How to remove a lower unit from a 1989 25 hp evinrude

Hey trying to remove this lower unit. But At the shift linkage it has a nut and but on that srew into each other to connect the rods. I disconected them but how to i remove the top bot like object so i can pull the lower unit it. It wont with it on there.

Slide the nut up, and you will find a cone shaped keeper. the keeper has a slit in it use something like a pick or knife to spread it open.
