I have a 1996 90hp Mercury 3 cylinder 2 stroke with the 3 jaw reverse clutch. I am trying to replace the shift cam. I have removed the pinion nut and was looking for tips on how to remove the pinion gear. I want to take the forward gear out of the way and make sure I have all the broken pieces of the shift cam removed.

Remove the w/pump base and the shaft will lift up.

I have already removed the water pump, impellor gaskets and the water pump base plate. I have tried to pull the drive shaft out with the pinion nut removed and it still seems stuck. I don't know if the pinion gear is pressed on or what I am afraid to try prying the pinion grear off.

It's rather common to have to grip the driveshaft in a vice between a couple of blocks of wood and a block to protect the housing and knocking the gear loose by driving the housing off it.
