Hello,

I am in the process of removing a DP-SM but I can't get the drive off the 6 studs. I have removed the 6 nuts, but the drive won't budge at all. It's the same problem as described here:

http://forums.iboats.com/volvo-pent.../volvo-penta-outdrive-stuck-studs-384044.html

In that thread, the poster was able to remove the pivot housing with the drive still attached then they used PB, and a drift to eventually separate the housing from the drive. So far I have attempted to spray liberal amounts of PB on the studs then rap the studs with a drift. I have also attached a come-along to the drive in order to keep constant pressure. I took a look at the pivot housing diagrams/removal instructions and am unsure if it can really be removed with the drive still attached (without screwing something up). To remove the housing, it says to remove the 2 screws on the trim sender, disengage the u-joint bellows from the lip of the pivot housing, remove retainer from exhaust boot, unscrew water hose nipple then remove the pivot pins. The only thing I can really do with the drive attached is remove the pivot pins (I think).

So, the questions are:

-Should I attempt to remove the pivot housing with the drive still attached then play with getting the housing off the drive?
- Should I just continue trying to get the drive off (without removing pivot housing) by using PB, banging on the studs a little and possibly using heat?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Can be done, but getting the raw water intake hose off can be awkward, you might be better off cutting it. Are you sure that it is corrosion around the 6 studs? Because sometimes the drive shaft rusts to the gimbal bearing if there has been a leak in the bellows. From time to time the gimbal bearing comes out on the drive shaft!

Even though I remove the drive every year and keep plenty of water resistant grease on the studs, it still seems a bit stuck. I usually end up having to "put the boot in" in other words give the cavitation plate a good kick from the side. You might find that a kick is not quite enough, so a wooden block and a heavy hammer might help, be aware that you will be putting quite some load on the steerig system though. Best of luck.

These usually stick at the gimbal brg or engine coupler. If it is either of those I'd rather fight it with the pivot hsg attached. (Note....I'm a fresh water guy, it's poss that salt boats get stuck drive to pivot hsg more often)
