I'm trying to get the lower end off a 1954 Evinrude Big Twin 25 HP so I can use it on another project. The pre 1955 OMC motors do not have the side access panel to get at the rod shift connection. Someone suggested I have to remove the block in order to get at the shift rod connection. Seems like a lot of work just to remove the lower end. Peter

Look at the linkages halfway down between the long exhaust housing and the steering swivel bracket.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think you are referring to the shift rod access panel on the left side of the exhaust tube that is common to OMC motors starting in 1955. The motor I have is a 1954 and it looks like the 1951-54 25 HP motors did not have this access panel.

On the contrary, there was a panel in 1953. If I remember correctly, it was eliminated in 1954 and they simply made it accessible without removing anything. Note that the connector is not inside the exhaust housing like 1955-up.

A much better explained note of what I meant.
