By 'shim' are you referring to the clip around the outside of the release valve? If so, you don't remove it, just unscrew it.

yup, the large retaining clip is meant to prevent the manual release from fitting out through the transom hole. you'll need to spin the clip to proper angle and then pull off with a good set os needlenose. The orings are size 06, 08, and 10. The middle one splits if you run trim without seating MRV. The tip breaks off if you have water in fluid. Nylon can absorb water and the tip gets jammed into hole. Broken tips are difficult at best. If the tip is broken then you're probably not going to have better than 30% chance of success as a DIY

Do you think replacing the MRV on an older motor is a good idea from a preventive maintenance stand point? What about flushing the fluid?

don't push your luck trying to get every last week from your old trim motor. Most water intrusion and system damages are caused by water getting into system via motor. as soon as is starts being noisy or acting up - replace it.

for storage, allow engine to rest on tilt stop or blocks and loosen the mrv 3 turns. if the system ever does get water into it then get a ram seal kit, rebuild the cylinder, and flush the system. otherwise, just enjoy your boat.

that should be enough.
