Hello all ,

I am in the process of sealing up my spare lower unit .

This is the end cap of the lower unit . There are 2 seals back to back behind this bearing, the seals are shredded from fishing lines .

The bearing seems to be pressed in , and I dont want to bust the bearing trying to get it out.

any ideas on what tool to use ?

Sorry, its an electric stringer

If it were me, I'd use my gimbal bearing puller on it.

Not sure if there is a lip machined in that area or not. Can you pull both seals out to see if you would have access to the back side of the bearing. If even a little back bearing surface, you can take a socket that fits it pretty close and tape it out. JMHO

Nah , I cant get the seals out , the bearing has to come out first . The back side is just flush with the prop shaft and nothing can be removed to expose the seals .

I think there is an OMC specific tool for that. If I'm reading my manual right (sometimes a challenge for me ) - OMC tool NO. 314436 is what get's used there.

Crap , I was worried about that . I have replaced the broken shift spring and done most of the rebuild without any special OMC tools . looks like I may have to get that one .

Thanks for looking that up BTW

Man, I don't know - I never cracked mine open that far. Wasn't man enough to go for it :baby:

The one time I had to deal with an upper, I just found a replacement.

Depending on the price of the roller bearing, you could split it to remove and replace it with a new one. Just an idea. If you can get a two or three finger reverse pronged puller on it, you could slide hammer or setup a situation where you can tighten a nut down to force the bearing out. Kind of like a standard three finger puller but a lot smaller and with reverse fingers to get under the bearing lip. It probably isn't in there very tight and will move fairly easy. If you have the capability, make such a tool. Just offering some ideas.

Good idea , if the bearing is cheap I just mangle it outta there .

I looked for a new end cap but can't find one , thats empty anyways.

putting the seals and bearing in will be easy , getting them out is another story

use the bearing numbers on the roller cage and go to a bearing house vs sourcing thru an OMC dealer. thats about a $40 bearing direct from a bearing house. multiply by about 5 if you go thru marine channels.

use a can of freeze-it to chill the bearing enough, it may just slide out.

If you have a slide hammer, you could put a large flat washer on the end and slide it under the bearing lip and slide the hammer to pull it out. Do that all around the bearing lip and I think you can save buying one as well. Or even take a flat bladed screw driver and use some leverage under it to leverage the bearing out going around the bearing lip. Worth a try. JMHO

Put it on top of empty soup can and put in oven at 450....will fall out in about 30 minutes. Wont need to purchase a new one unless its damaged.

Damn , that would be awesome .

I'm not doubting you , but wouldn't everything expand as one ? The bearing and housing expanding together

I will give it a whirl

The coefficient of thermal expansion is higher for aluminum than it is for steel, so the housing will expand more and it will drop out.

Awesome , sounds like a plan.

Now I need to just get the Mrs. outta the house for a few hours as I am sure that will stink the kitchen up a little bit .

Thanks for the tip !
