I'm having problems with my Trim Switch which is on the Control Handle. I can lower my outdrive but it will not bring it back up. My trailer switch will. That is what I'm using right now. I think the switch is bad or a loose wire but I don't know how to take the Control Handle off to get to it. Could someone tell me how to take the handle off or what I have to do to get the switch out of the Control Handle? I have a 1996 21" Larson with a Alpha 1, 5.7 Mercursier.

If yours is like mine then the switch is not removable. The handle is glued together and cannot be taken apart. I think they want you to buy a new handle.

First make sure it's the switch that's actually the problem. Take a voltmeter and see if your getting power through the switch or not.

In my old boat the switch went bad and I mounted a new waterproof toggle switch from NAPA on the dash to control the tilt/trim. Cost me $3 for the toggle and $2 worth of wire.

My newer boat is now having the same problem. I was looking at it the other day and I think I can take my dremel and cut around the switch, take the old one out, put a new switch in, and then epoxy everything back together.

Before you take the control apart...check the trim limit switch on the outdrive. Often the wire will corrode and break. If you turn your outdrive you can see the wire. From what I understand...it is a pain in the butt to replace.

There's Nothing Wrong with your Switch..............

BRG25 is Dead On Right..........

Unplug,+ Bypass the Limit Switch down where the wire comes thru the Inside of the transom plate,... It's hooked up with Bullet Connecters,.. Just Unplug,+ Replug..........

The Drawback is,..... The Up button,+ the Trailer button do the Same Job.......... It Won't Stop at the trim limit.........

Are you checking this on the trailer? I have to lower the trailer front end to get my drive unit low enough to use the trim up switch. Try putting the front of your boat way down and lower the out drive to the ground and then try using the trim up switch. Easiest thing to try before getting out any tools.
