The engine is an '82 OMC 2.5 liter 4 cyl. How do I change the belt? The steel brace for the trim is in the way. I do realize I may have to take it off, but what is the right way to do this and what is the torque of the bolts supposed to be?

Anyone have a part number or should I just match up the old one to a new one?

Thanks.

Support the motor form under motor. Unbolt the motor mount and slip on 2 belts. Put one on and leave the other as a spare. Put the mount back on.

I have the manual if you need any of the steps. I bought mine (1981) this winter and the previous owner had rigged a spare that I can install on the water should the existing one break. Like boatist says, install one, place the second under your obstruction so it can be installed without taking it all apart and use some plastic ties to tie it away from anything that moves. Make sure you use a 2x4 or something to support your motor. Send a reply if you need the book for anything. Good luck-Jeff

Would the outdrive need to be realigned after doing this?

Not according to my manual. Only raise or lower enough to slide the new belts through though.

Re: How to replace belt

I like the idea of putting on a second belt for emergencies. Good idea.

jh19 - When I unbolt the motor mount, do I need to unbolt both sides (I am hoping there is a spacer I can remove)? If I do unbolt both sides how do I go about making a space wide enough to slide the belt in and will a 2x4 be enough to support the engine?

Thanks.

According to the book:
1. Raise front of engine by lowering trim.
2. Place a 2X4 under engine for support (put it where it wont crush anything).
3. Lower engine until it just touches the 2x4.
4. Remove trim unit bolts (2 to the left of timing cover, 2 to the left of the alternator).
5. loosen alternator bolts.
6. Tilt the trim assembly forward to allow access.
7. Place belt.
8. Installation is the reverse. Dont forget to tighten belt.

Good luck! -Jeff

One more thing, you might want to buy a book, not that I know ahelluvalot, but as a do it yourselfer, I wouldn't touch a boat without one. Way too many things to screw up! Heres a link to an ebay search for this model. They are as low as $.99, just check the condition and shipping charges. Have a good weekend.-Jeff

http://search.ebay.com/omc-1964-1986_W0QQsojsZ1QQfromZR40QQsatitleZomcQ201964-1986

Excellent! Do you have an ISDN number off of the back of the book? One more thing - Does the book give specs on the torque of the bolts when you put 'em back.

Thanks again......Bill

Table 2 isn't there, and I looked in the 86-93 book, and it's a different tilt system (cobra). I would say, "real tight ftlbs" would do it!
