how to replaced the rpm gauge????

last summer my alternator wasnt charging my batterrie n we broke down in the lake so i call a buddy n he came with a jump box well while my friend on board with me hook up the battery box the wrong way possitive to negative n negative to possite my rpm gauge started to smoke since them it hasnt worked so im assuming i need to replace it how do i choose the right one for my boat? i have an 1977 omc 120hp with a stern drive. where does it hook up to the engine? thanks for your help

You don't need to go near the engine. You buy whatever tach lights your fire. There are only four connections and all are on the back of the tach.

the lights still work the needle doesnt move from 0 when i give it gas

If it was smoking then you fried it. Here is a link for some tachometers. You want a 6,000 RPM model for I/O. Pick your size and style. Like silvertip said real easy to replace, just 4 wires and they're all on the back of the tachometer.
