How to rotate Distributor Cap for timing adjustment

I need to adjust the timing on my Volvo Penta 1998 3.0GL. Idles pretty rough.
I can't figure out how to twist the actual distributor cap. Is there a hidden bracket that I am not seeing?
I know the process once I can get it loose, but I'm sort of baffled at what is keeping this dist cap from rotating...

This is my first Volvo, I had a Merc 888 before this... and thankfully found someone to buy it from me... hoping for the best.

Re: How to rotate Distributor Cap for timing adjustment

There is a bolt locking it in place underneath the edge of the cap.
Look underneath, toward the back of the engine.

Just look really closely underneath the cap, or feel under there; you'll find it.

I think it takes about a 1/2" wrench or somewhere around there....

But there is a process to change the timing on that engine; you need a jumper plug
to set the distributor to base timing in order for the timing light to work properly.

Do a search for "timing" and you will find more info and diagrams about the plug.
You don't have to order the special one; you can make one yourself if you're handy
with wiring and small connectors. It's pretty easy.

But rough idle can also be caused by bad carb adjustments, the need for a carb rebuild, etc....,
so timing is just one step of the tuning process.

A new cap and rotor might be in order too, based on age and/or use.
