The gear box in my 1962 28hp johnson outboard is starting to jump out of gear .I found a new gearbox assembly(part number OMC 0382921) but they won"t ship outside of the US.Does anyone know a way of getting parts like this to Australia.

Regards Kevin

Shipping will be costly for a heavy item like that. If I were you, I'd take it apart and see exactly what it needs and just order those parts.

The price of complete gearbox is listed at $170(OEM Parts )The forward gear alone would cost me that much here in Australia. If I could get complete gearbox for around $300 it would be worth it. Anyway if its starts to cost a lot more it may be time to look at upgrading to a newer motor.

What inspection has been done ???------On a few motors you can swap forward and reverse gear and the clutch dog.----That 28 HP is one of those motors.-----Inspect all linkages and adjustments.-----------Forward gear bushing must be removed and installed in the reverse gear.-Full floating bushing from reverse will just slip in the forward gear.

I haven't checked anything yet as I'm hoping to use the boat a couple more times before doing anything. The problem only occurs when trying to get up on the plane, once going no problems.

If you continue to let it bang like that, it will very quickly get much worse and more expensive, including beating the shift linkage to death. Whatever you decide to do, do it now.

I took the boat out again with one less person and had no problems at all. I guessing that the forward gear and clutch dog are just starting to wear out and problems are only occurring at times of high load. I think I will continue to use the boat for a bit longer and be gentle when getting up on the plane. If the motor starts to jump out of gear again I will have to fix the problem before causing more damage

Re: How to ship parts to Australia

Had more problems today so I decided to strip gearbox and found the forward gear and clutch dog to be very rounded .The reverse gear also had some wear but not as bad .So it looks like I will need to get a new forward gear ,clutch dog and seal kit. Depending on postage costs it doesn’t seem like there will be much difference in buying a complete new gearbox or just buying the parts. This does seem a bit crazy?
