How to soften gaskets to minimize scraping

Hello All,

With regards to a tore down outboard motor, what is the best way to remove the stubborn gasket materials from the aluminium case pieces without scratching the aluminium? Is there something the surface can be soaked in to soften them for clean damage free removal?

You can buy gasket remover at your local autoparts store that works pretty well. I use oven cleaner and then power wash them off and use a plastic scraper to get the really stubborn parts.
I've heard lacquer thinner or MEK works pretty good too but haven't tried it.
