I just bought a 86 bayliner capri with a Force 85 HP outboard motor. How can i start this motor without having to put it in the lake? I've seen these things that look like suction cups that go on the side of the motor so you can run it with a water hose, but on my motor there is no where for them to go?

We live 1 1/2 hours from the lake and i would like to test it at my house first!

Thanks

New at this boating stuff. But LOVE it already.
I was told to put lower unit in trash can and keep fresh water in it. Then it would be o.k.
Never done it, sure someone will tell us if this is right or not.

I've seen that done a few times, but on much smaller motors, i wasn't sure if it would let it breath right.

airtrav, check the lower unit just in front of the prop, there will be a small grill looking thing on each side of the motor, that's the water intake, slide the earmuffs over the lower unit from the front of the motor and cover these grills with the rubber suction cup part of the earmuffs, turn the water on enough so water flows from around the suction cup part, keep an eye on the earmuffs so it doesn't fall off when the engine is running, the water pump impeller doesn't like running dry. Start the engine and water will spray from the holes on the back of the engine at a point about a foot or so above the prop. Good luck.
