Adapt your garden hose to the hose that goes into the thermostat housing from the transom shield. Being creative is not a problem as to what fittings to use. You DO NOT have to go from from where the drive mounts, you can hook up right to the barb on the stat housing.
Dumb question maybe. Does he have to be concerned with household water pressure blowing out a seal or gasket in the system if he makes a tight seal at the stat (or someplace else)?
Just wanted to make sure he doesn't pop a head gasket or something.. I am just thinking out loud here though. I though muffs inherently leak by design to avoid over pressure.
