If your ignition switch fails, can you get a screwdriver and short out the starter like we use to do on our old cars?

What kind of motor?

If its a magneto ignition the most common key switch failure is for the switch to ground out. So even if you have the key "On" the ignition circuit is grounded so the motor has no spark. You have to eleminate the kill circuit and then you can jump the solenoid. The downside is theres no way to shut the motor off unless you flood it. Which may be harder than it sounds.

On my motor I have used a jumper wire to jump +12 to the starter relay. This worked cause the switch was broke but the relay was fine. I jumped it to the post that made the relay close.
