How to store gas tank?

When I am through fishing and cleaning up the boat, should I close the vent on the plastic 6-gallon gas tank that I use for my boat motor?

My concern is water getting in it.

But if I do close the vent, the heat causes it to swell.

Normally the boat/motor/gas is under a tarp (until I can pry money from my wife's fingers to build a boat shed -- something about spending all this money rebuilding stringers, deck, 2 lounge seats, carpet, etc. :p during the last 6 months or so) but sometimes I'll fish 2 days in a row and leave it out at night where the boat could get rained on and possibly get water in the tank?

James - I would leave it open and if you are concerned about water put some kind of cover over it.

James,
I leave mine open less than half a turn. Lets fuel vapour out but no water gets in.
Regards,
Peter.
