how to tell 87 or newer 305

So I was told my motor is a 87 volvo 225, which is a 305... In 87 gm changed their blocks. But from what I have seen, the 87+ have valve cover bolts in the middle of the cover. Mine are around the sides.
does this mean that it is an older block -86.

Ayuh,... Probably, or the heads may not be original....

Running the casting #s will tell ya for sure...

A quick way to tell is look at the 4 corners of oil pan where they meet the block, the fasteners will be studs&nuts, not bolts. And the V8 went to one-piece seal and pan gasket in 86, and retained the perimeter bolt heads until 87
