I have a 1978 mercury 40 hp and don't know what size it is. There is 1736 stamped on the outside and 48-7313-1 stamped on the back inside on the hub. Any idea what size this is?

Are you referring to the area under the prop nut? Usually the 48- number ends in the pitch is there another digit after the 1?
probably a 1,2 or 3

It's hard to see but I think there is a 4 after the 1

And I didn't see anything under the prop nut. The numbers were on the back side of the hub

A Mercury black Max # 48-73138A40-14P is a 10-1/4 X 14 pitch that fits a 40 hp motor.

The current # would be QA2082X for the same prop.

It can be found in the prop section.
