Thought I had a alum prop cause it was black. Took it off and it seems very heavy. Also spots where paint has come off, it is shiny underneath. How do I tell what it is? Any one know the weight differences?
Thanks

SS a lot harder and heavier than aluminum. You could scratch a mark on an aluminum prop with a knife point, but SS very hard to scratch. If you ever held one of each in your hand, then you'd know the difference! Sounds like you've got SS...

Take a nail, screw, knife, something steel, and try to scratch it. (somewhere that won't damage it) Aluminum is easily scratched, stainless is harder.

You can tell fairly easily by weight, but if you have no reference, this isn't an option for you.

It weighs in at 14lbs, scatch test inconclusive as it is painted, so hard to tell if it is just scatching the paint or the prop....

Then it is SS. If it is aluminum it would have scratched almost as easily as the paint.

It depends on the grade of stainless. Some is, some is not. I do not remember which grades are which right now. But yes, ALL grades of aluminum are non-magnetic.

I thought so... Another way to tell is, all you have to do is THINK about going near a sand bar with an alum prop and all the blades will break off. If its SS, you can dig a trench thru the same sand bar and sustain only minor nicks and scrapes!;):D

Well I feel better not being able to tell them apart, as I thought I was just stupid....called the prop shop and he was unsure, but thought it was Alum from what I discribed. Boxed it up and sending it to them, so will know when they call me after recieving it.

By the way sending it to Soderblooms out of MN, they have outstanding pricing on there repairs.

$33.75 plus $10.00 for return shipping on the aluminum
$74.25 plus $10.00 for return shipping on the sst

Will let you know how satisfied I am with the work when I get it back.
Thanks

Well, got a call from Jay from Soderblooms, turns out it is a OMC SS prop. so they are going to remove the black paint, polish it up, repair the nicks...all for the 74 dollars plus 10 in shipping....cool!
