I recently got this 1997 boat with volvo penta 3.0 in it. My outdrive is a penta cobra sx. I had a fuel pump problem but have installed a new one and cleaned out the gas tank. There is some sort of flush kit on the motor you can put a garden hose on, but when I did it blew off the water hose that was clamped to the thermostate housing. Is this not the way to run it????, should I use muffs to run it???.............thank you...........new to I.O.'s

ermack,

Get a set of muffs and use a garden hose. They only cost about $10. Once the engine starts, be careful around the prop and keep the rpms at idle or slightly above. Shifting to forward or reverse is also OK but the gearset will not have any cooling - so a few minutes in gear will not destroy anything. Set the hose water rate at a rate that allows some leakage at the muffs to the ground. Shifting will probably appear rough as the noise will not be muffled by the water.

I usually check mine in the driveway before trailering to the lake and then finding out it won't start.

Summer is now - so get it tested and in the water.

Post a picture of the fitting that you were trying to flush from initially.

I suspect the hose to the thermostat housing might have been a bit loose. . . .

However, if you get a set of 'muffs' and hook it up to the outdrive, that will probably be a better way. The muffs will release extra pressure, whereas the flush connection may not.

Thanks, I found out it was the impeller in the water pump. the little fins were broke off and stuck in hose. Is there another pump to cool the outdrive??? or is the one in the boat the only one?. thanks again.
